From the Transactions of 'The Maine Lodge of Research' Volume 20 1998-1999 - by an unknown Brother.
I now present you the working tools of the Pessimist and Chronic Objector, which are the Hammer and Monkey Wrench, and are thus explained:
The Hammer is an instrument used by operative mechanics to drive nails, adjust timbers and other useful purposes in constructing an edifice, but we, as Pessimists and Chronic Objectors are taught to use it to undermine our fellow men, and to nullify and destroy their work - especially if they are doing something better than we can do it.
The Monkey Wrench is an instrument used by operative mechanics to assemble machinery and tighten bolts that there may be no breakdown of the work, but we as Pessimists and Chronic Objectors are taught to use it for the more ignoble and inglorious purpose of casting it into the machinery of the Lodge, and to gum up its works.
From the Minnesota State Grange Memorial Service - 2003
Father God, we know that with you is peace and quiet rest, and to this place we would retreat from our sorrows and cares. While we may not escape the pains of this world, we can be assured that with you and in you we can be relieved of our anguish and grief. We offer our memories of our departed members and friends, as a tribute to their lives. Hear our prayer on behalf of our great fraternity, that all those who have gone before us will not have lived in vain; but that we will rise-up stronger because of their devotion and duty. Amen
