The Masonic Trowel

... to spread the cement of brotherly love and affection, that cement which unites us into one sacred band or society of brothers, among whom no contention should ever exist, but that noble emulation of who can best work or best agree ...

MASONIC TALKS

Last Modified: March 25, 2014

In this page you will find short articles that have been written by some illustrious brothers regarding the craft.  Most of these are very old, and I do not have the entire collection.  Click on the picture to open it.

If by any chance you have some that I am missing, please be so kind to email me a text or word format of it so others may enjoy them.

"Old Tiler Talks" by Carl Claudy -1924

The Old Tiler first appeared in print in August, 1921 when the first of four hundred and fourteen "Old Tiler Talks" were printed in the Fellowship Forum, a fraternal newspaper published in Washington, D.C.
In 1925 the publisher (The Temple Publishers) asked the author to select a few of the best of the talks and thirty-one were accordingly made into a little volume, copyrighted in that year.
By the time they were all sold the Fellowship Forum ran head on into the depression and disappeared and with it the Old Tiler.
The portrait of the Old Tile on the book jacket is the loving work of Brother Frank A. Stockwell of Buffalo, New Your, who has succeeded in getting the biting sarcasm, courage and philosophy of the Old Tiler into his kindly face.

"The Old Past Master" by Carl Claudy -1924

Of the 24 Old Past Master story-essays in this book, all but four were written for the Detroit Masonic News, to whose Editor, Douglas Martin, The Masonic Service Association is indebted for cooperation which makes this little book possible. The four stories included here which were not written for the Detroit Masonic News, were published in The Master Mason

"Rays of Masonry" by Dewey Wollstein -1953

A profound comprehension and understanding of the basic, the ultimate, the philosophy of life, of truth in its cosmic sense, of Masonry if you choose. Withal, a terseness of composition reveals a fine distillation of thought.

"The Builder Magazine" by Joseph Fort Newton
A Journal For The Masonic Student

The Builder Magazine was published from 1915 through 1930 by the National Masonic Research Society.  Many Masonic Librarians and scholars believe that The Builder Magazine was the best American Masonic magazine ever published.

The fifteen year collection (185 monthly issues) include thousands of excellent articles on Masonic history, philosophy, jurisprudence, poetry, landmarks and symbolism.

"The Short Talk Bulletins"

The Short Talk Bulletins are amazing articles on all aspects of Masonry published by the Masonic Service Association. The Bulletins have been published monthly since 1923 and all of the Short Talk Bulletins are still available in print.

"Three Five Seven" by Ed Halpaus

These short talks written mostly by Ed when he served as the Grand Lodge Educator for the Grand Lodge of Minnesota, with the purpose of passing on information to Masonic Students, information he would come across that in his opinion would be of useful interest to Freemasons. Because of this some of the content may not meet the strictest test of a Masonic article; however, many would, and he thinks many will meet the test of being a Masonic article if we think of a Masonic article being one which would include information that is useful and interesting information a Mason could learn from. Articles are mostly written by him, but at times he would include works from others, whose writing heI enjoyed.
